Northwoods Day 3 Glidden to Loon Lagoon Resort, Mercer WI

 Northwoods Day 3
Marion park in Glidden to Mercer,WI, Loon Lagoon Resort
Sept 26, 2020

41.4 miles
Ride time: 3:57
Total time about 5 hours

Morning breaks, light suffuses from all around; my consciousness is awakened to just one sound - drip, drip, drip;

I am camping under a colorful maple, and it is either lightly raining, or the maple is making it last.
I finally decide it is the maple playing tricks on my poor mountain oriented mind, and peak my head out. A fine fog greets me, yet the pavement is not wet.
I drag all of my gear to the pavilion and pack, cook breakfast while I attempt in vain to dry my tent fly. I snap a few more shots of the unique Marion Park and leave about 10.

The fog has lifted and reveal a steel grey sky. There is a 50% chance of rain today, so I am going to do a modest length day hoping to avoid the highest chances in the kate afternoon and evening.
First 10 miles are along relatively busy US51 to the little burg of Butternut. Even in that somewhat forlorn place, art stretches to be seen in the form of campy fish andirondac chairs.

Still, the trees are nice, especially in the narrower and often twisty county roads this route travel via.

I stop at a possible county campground, Lake of the Falls. It is nice country, falls flowing into the calm lake, colors abound across the waters.

I am tempted, but 7 more miles brings me to an rv campground about 3PM, in Mercer with showers, laundry, and an indoor rec room to hang it (remember the weather forecast?)

I quickly setup my tent, and the proprietress stops by to chat. They got hit by the incredible storm last night, with lots of rain and golf ball sized hail. She wouldn't want to be in a tent. She sez it's gonna be slow in the campground, so feel free to sleep on the couch in the rec room. I thank her and think on it as I run to town for a Subway.
Get back and eat, and the rumbling states. In a scurry I get my tent and gear into rec room, just in the nick of time. The rain comes hard, in waves for hours until a I sleep. Glad I am not stuck in my tent.
Now I can shower, do laundry, work on this blog from the dry comfort of padded couch in the rec room.

Damn, sometimes the world works in mysterious ways.

Positive waves!!!

Some sundry images from today
wish I could have tried some, alas on a bike

a fine detailing job, almost looks natural. This holy look is very popular up in these parts

And the political sign of the day

  1. Too bad you could not carry a can of the Covid beer. It would have made a fine addition to your collection.

  4. Belly laugh. I remember a lot of cars looking like that in Northern NY where I grew up. Also a lot of your fall color photos are making me homesick. Love the CoVid Beer in cans. 2.0

    1. Hey Marianne,
Great to hear from you. Yep, up in gods country in the fall makes me homesick too. But the glory is short lived up in those parts, at least for those of us acclimated to the warm dry Colorado weather.

As it turns out I returned to Mercer and picked up some of those Covid beers. I like the attitude and the beer is good too,
