Northwoods Day 2- Boulder Lodge to Glidden. WI
Northwoods Day 2
Sept 25, 2020
28.5 miles
Ride time: 2:53
Total time about 3.5 hours
Dawn breaks. Dampness permeates the air, my clothes, and yes even my hair. It looks like I have more now, now that my long submerged waves are back cresting the surface with all of this humidity. Might be worth all the extra sweating and, well you know, that other watery thing we do.
The grey damp morning leads to a grey day. The foilage is still good, but muted, as if the trees are awaiting sunshine to sing forth in their brilliance.
I have a short day, as I am a bit tired from the inaugural days duration, and the next camping is more than double milage to Glidden. Also, weatherman sez there is a 50% chance of rain, and that is never a fun scenario.
I stay at the Marion city park in Glidden. Quite a park. Enclosed bandstand, several pavilions, both catholic AND lutheran food stands (separate of course), a history museum, and its own cluster of maples trying to out compete each other.
Lucky me, the bathrooms are all locked and no available water. A quick zip into town remedies that. Also lucky, the pavilions have 120v, and it is still on. So I charge devices, make calls and fix dinner.
As dusk winds down to evening, I see lights dancing to the north, and there is faint rumblings rolling over the northland's towards me. My weather app says there is a tornado & heavy thunderstorm warning. Fortunately, it is tracking north of me, but I get a wonderful show for 30 minutes.
I head to some unusually isolated viewing stands, covered bleachers (like for a parade, but no area in front) to watch mother nature's light show. While heat lighting lights up towering clouds from left to right, a few distant bolts scour the horizon. The center of the atmospheres anger slowly works it way to the east, the wind picks up, leaves rattling on the grandstands cover, fooling me many times that the rain is a comin'!
Still, I do use the additional guy lines on my tent tonight.
The fall tree colors look great good timing indeed. Stay dry hopefully :)

Yep colors are good, even midwest grey lighting. Escaped serious rain so far but it is damp. Don't expect to escape this week though.
DeleteDay rain forecast for next 3 days -

Did you encounter any spirits on Ghost Lake?
ReplyDeleteI should of told you about the world's largest Muskie in Hayward.
Also about a great brewpub The Angry Minnow.
Short cut around hayward, but maybe worth visiting if I head north is truck after riding.
DeleteNot clear I will get to sample many brewpubs due to Covid rates up here. unless there is a convergence of weather and pub. Send me positive waves!!!
